The Ins and Outs of Anal Glands
Anal glands are odor glands found on both ends of the dog's anus. Typically, they are located at the four and eight o' clock positions. When your dog has a bowel movement, these glands will release a strong musky, odor. However, if the diarrhea is caused by an infection, it will produce a horrible odor as well.
So how do you determine which glands are actually working? You can check the color of your dog's stool. Normal stools usually indicate that the dog's anal glands are working properly. If your dog's stools are light yellow or green, it is likely that the anal glands are not working correctly. This is also a very common complaint in younger dogs, particularly those from long haired breeds. It is very common in Golden Retrievers and other long-haired breeds. These dogs can often have infection that is causing the unpleasant odor.
How can you help treat this condition? First, it is important for your pet to eat quality dog food that is low in protein. Also, as with humans, you can help your dog's symptoms by taking a daily supplement. Some people have had success with herbal supplements that are made specifically to treat this problem. The supplements may require some time to be effective, so be patient.
Consult you local veterinarian about the anal gland procedures that they preform.
